ALS Self-Help Group

About ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Motor Neuron Disease):

ALS is a serious illness affecting the central nervous system.  According to the current state of knowledge, it can be neither cured nor stopped.

Step by step, patients lose their autonomy.  The symptomatology of ALS necessitates adaptation of the patient’s lifestyle.

It leads to immobility and, at the same time, increases the caring responsibilities of relatives and friends.

As a result, social isolation becomes a great risk but despite immobility, social contact should be encouraged as much as possible because this is important and supportive.

Self-help Group for relatives and friends of ALS patients:

Within the framework of the SFU Private University Clinic, the possibility to participate in a self-help group has existed since June 2006.

People whose relatives have been diagnosed with ALS meet to exchange thoughts, discuss their own experiences, receive advice and gain mutual support.  Together with a team of experts, the self-help group offers relief and encouragement through communication with others in similar situations.

Participation is free of charge.

Public support:

ALS is still to a great extent unresearched.  An expert-supported self-help group was set up to provide relatives of ALS patients with the following objectives:

  • On the one hand, to offer help and assistance to people in need
  • On the other hand, to encourage scientific discussion in a field that has hardly been investigated until now.
Austrian commercial enterprises and private individuals can make a significant contribution towards supporting the ALS Self-help Group and scientific research in the following ways:
  • Financing the activities
  • Free-of-charge services
  • Donations in kind.
