Infant-toddler-parent psychotherapy

Becoming parents, being parents

Pregnancy, birth, the first years of a child’s life, becoming parents and being parents are an exciting stage of life that is usually associated with many changes. The transition to parenthood and the early development of a child between the ages of 0 and 3 is a phase of life full of opportunities and risks, which is of great importance for the further development of the child and the parents.

Sometimes crises and emotional problems occur for parents, babies and toddlers, for example

  • during a stressful pregnancy and difficult birth
  • when a baby is born prematurely
  • if the baby sleeps badly and cries a lot
  • if there is a feeling of not being able to understand or calm the baby
  • if there are difficulties with feeding or breastfeeding
  • if there is a feeling of being overwhelmed and exhausted when being with the baby
  • if there are difficulties in finding an emotional relationship with the baby
  • in case of separation anxiety
  • if the child has behavioural problems
  • if there is concern that the child is not developing healthily

How we can help

After an initial consultation and clinical-psychological diagnostics, we try to understand your fears, difficulties and worries in empathetic discussions with you and your baby/toddler so that the relationship between you and your child can regain its balance. Experiences from your own life story can also be helpful here.

The SKEPT treatment

The chance of being able to help with crises and emotional problems between you and your baby/toddler through psychotherapeutic interventions is great, as infant-toddler-parent psychotherapy (SKEPT) starts early and treatment is carried out together with you and the baby/toddler. Infant-toddler-parent psychotherapy (SCEPT) is a psychoanalytical method for intercepting early stresses and disorders in good time and at the point where they arise. The prognosis for early SKEPT treatment is favourable. Experience has shown that symptoms often improve after just a few hours of therapy.

Course of psychotherapy

An initial consultation takes place at the beginning, usually followed by a child psychological assessment. If the legal requirements are met, the costs of psychotherapy can be covered by the Vienna Regional Health Insurance Fund.
